The Kingdom of Bhutan has many forts, fortresses (Dzongs), temples and monasteries, most of them are active and viable institutions. The multifunctional Dzongs are architectural masterpieces and are designed and built without any building plans, they were built from the directions and dictations of a high Lama or Rinpoche (buddhist teacher) inspired by spiritual forces. Dzongs were used by the military as garrisons or armories, but also by administrative bodies of a district, by monks and as places of trade and congregate and to share in celebration.

When entering a Dzong, make sure you are dressed properly, Bhutanese would appreciate it a lot if don't wear jeans.

Monasteries and temples are scattered all over The Kingdom of Bhutan. They were built to suppress the demons and demonesses that harmed the people, to commemorate the victory of Buddhism or to fulfill the wish of a religious master according to a vision and prophecy.
